This is my entry for the national geographic #PlanetorPlastic writing contest. This is a short story with which I would like to help raise awareness for the wrong that is being done to our oceans. This is a terrible situation, one that is of our own making. I hope this story impacts you to try and change.

Barely Human: A Short Story Collection
Here lies a series of short stories written out of pure boredom or when ideas I conjure up don't fit nor expand into any bigger story. As I'll be too burdened with college and personal life, I won't be continuing Hollow Ocean for the time being as I would need to revise it. However, I took the time to make some short stories that I oftentimes use as submissions for my finals. Should the need arise, I'm not opposed to writing a second collection.
Still We Rise
She always made her life seem good to all her friends, so no one ever cared to take a deeper look into what it's liked behind closed doors. Everyday was a nightmare They always kept the themselves, that was until they noticed how the girl with ocean blue eyes was changing. They observed from a distance, and priced together what was changing her. When the four get paired together for a project, it allows them to be who they really are, and ignore the bad. One of the most painful things on earth is to lose a loved one. Whether in death or heartbreak. It's a pain different from all others. You feel every burn, every ache, your senses awaken, and greedily await a memory to sip in and then wreck your entire being. She took everything. His Light. His Heart. His Soul. It had no end. For years it went on like it would never end. But, it did. Just in passing, a normal day, a day like every other, but it was the day, his heart danced truly and his chest tighten as if a fierce wind had passed by, blending with his soul, leaving a suffocating feeling in his chest, a choking sensation in his throat, there was a pressure making it hard to breathe. ******* "My heart has heated for the human and my blood has flown for him. A Mermaid Tale - Book 1 (IN EDITING)
"I was smoking on Shellfish Bridge, thinking about how I had completely screwed up my life, when an idea occurred to me; what if I jumped?" Ask Tarabelle Johansson, an 18 year old girl that wanted to end her life, even though it had barely begun. Despite having to leave behind her older brother Ridge, Tara saw no good reason to stay alive much longer. Her mother has been deceased since she was nine and her father was a jobless drunk that had fun abusing Tara in every single way. The day Tara finally "quits" her job, she also decides to quit her life the easy way, by jumping off a bridge. But when she jumps off, nothing happens. She was supposed to die...only she didn't. The young woman was saved by the most unlikely creature possible, a mermaid. Instead of swimming Tara back to the surface to live on her life, the sea-girl decides to turn Tarabelle into a mermaid. Now, not only is Tara forced to live in an underwater kingdom full of human fish and has no idea how to adapt, but she also falls for the prince (soon to be king) Taiven. But the mermen is already engaged, and Tara finds out that his bride to be Adara is not what she appears. While all of this happens under sea, back on land Tarabelle's older brother Ridge, attempts to find out what exactly happened to her. He is convinced that his little sister would not commit suicide...or would she? This is the dazzling story about a girl who's life got turned upside down the day she wanted to die. Soon, Beca and Pepper are full blown mermaids! They are going to have to find a way out of this mess and with the help of their new friends, Charity and Sarah, they can escape. Cursed with fins
My name is Skylar Smith, On a normal walk back home from a friends house, a storm hits. I get sucked down into a whirlpool and I come out with fins. Now each passing day I'm becoming more mermaid than human. Later, when I'm almost fully mermaid, the REAL mermaids want me to stay in the ocean forever with them. I have to stay away from the real mermaids and I can't let people know. I have to avoid water the best I can. I have to find a way to reverse the curse before time runs out....
