Gideon sees dead people. All the time. And it's a pain in his ass. All he wants to do is drink his beer, screw his woman, watch his television, and die. And maybe not in that exact order. But instead, he's called to do what all those "blessed" in his family are told they must. Assisting in the passing over of disgruntled spirits sounds like it would be an emotionally rewarding endeavor, but it is mostly just tiresome as hell. Dealing with the angels and demons that govern limbo is just as shitty as the rest of the gig. Then there's the downside that no one warned him about. Neglecting his duties results in the unwelcome, unsettling arrival of a package in his mailbox. The deck of tarot cards on the inside filled with strange symbols and warnings, and a note. "The Hierophant is watching you." Suddenly, there's a brand on his wrist that threatens to claim his life if he doesn't figure out what the enigmatic Hierophant wants from him. If the strange mass of dark energy flitting around the city doesn't kill him first. So maybe dying isn't all that high on his list anymore. Nineteen year old Anna Preston appears to lead a life typical for a young woman in modern-day America. But she has a secret. For the past three years she's been seeing shadowy figures mingling with the populace. Made of smoke and vapor with a vaguely human form, they are not overtly threatening, but in the recesses of her mind there are whispers of nightmares long buried and forgotten. Jared is of a race created solely for the purpose of protecting humankind from demons, and for the first two centuries of life he was fully devoted to the service. Until the very ones he protected repaid him by destroying everything he ever loved. For decades Jared's hatred of humans was a living thing, but time has a way of dulling strong emotion and centuries later he is mostly indifferent. But when he learns a vial of his blood is being used in depraved activities, a long forgotten past comes hurdling back. ** Humans, Vampires, Faerians, and Shifters once banded together to fight their common enemy, but it has been many centuries since the demons presented a real threat to the world- and in these modern times most are oblivious to the danger lurking just beyond their perception and mankind has reduced both allies and enemies to fairy tales and boogie men. Signs are beginning to appear that allude to this threat rising in power once more, but with the alliances largely broken and those still continuing the fight few and far between, the human race is on the precipice of a grave danger that could threaten their very existence. And so it is of dire need for the allies to gather together once more. Ancient prophesies will soon begin to surface, one in particular that speaks of a unifying force initiated by the unlikeliest of beings...
