Human minds in android bodies. What could possibly go wrong? Alyss was raised in a walled compound, cared for by the Nandroids that run it. She's never experienced anything outside the complex. Well, except for that small square of sky above the high walls of the exercise yard. In just two months, Alyss will turn eighteen and her consciousness will be transferred into an android. Such is the way of the Society: giving its citizens bodies that will never age or decay. There's just one problem: a mysterious voice in an empty corridor that warns Alyss things are not what they seem. When an equipment malfunction grants her a glimpse into the world beyond the walls, Alyss is thrown headlong into a race for her life. The Society lied. They aren't putting her mind in an android body...they're programming it to act like her. And Alyss herself will die, to be replaced by something that's not quite human. In a world where human and android are indistinguishable, nobody can be trusted. The Society is coming for her...and if they catch her, she's going to die.
