Sam remembered the first time he realized he wanted to die. He was overlooking the private lake near his house, thinking about how deep the water was and imagining if the icy water filling his lungs would feel better than the suffocation he's grown accustomed to. But today he was standing next to his neighbour, Mara, the ever curious and observant new friend of his. He was standing in the lake as the water reached his knees and he felt her eyes watching him from the shore. He enjoyed her company, and maybe she was teaching him all the lovely things to enjoy before dying. Maybe her friendship was what he needed.
