The Corner Of Her Eye

Lulee Sparks has only shadow memories of her parents. She was just a toddler-gal when her mother was lost in the smoky blue, the labyrinthine forest that surrounded their mountain home. When Callie-ma didn't arrive home, Faller-pa, her father pleaded with the townsfolk for help, but the town stood by without offering resources to help locate the young mother. Lulee's father, determined to find his wife, left at dusk to search for her, although begged by his mother and father to wait until morning. He refused and ended up becoming lost too.

Lulee lives with her Maw Maw Cry, and Paw Paw Fist, her older sibling, Brother Boy, and younger sibling twins, 6 year old Baby Brother Boy, and Baby Sister Girl.

Life is hard for Lulee. She is treated like a slave and lives a miserable sleep deprived existence. Her older Brother is dangerous, and Maw Maw Cry is heavy handed. Lulee lives in brutal circumstances until she realizes that her special powers can change her life.

"That Lulee Sparks is a strange one. They're all strange ones living up there on that mountain. That big brother, the old ones, the little 'uns."
The town did not approve of them. Some even hated them. But who hated each other more?
"They're wild as the mountain-rabids, crazy, witchy."

Spoken of only in late night whispers. The town tried to hide their own guilt.
