Grand Duchess Anona of Norwin has served as a military nurse for the past two years her country has been at war. Despite her undeniable skill in the medical field, she desires what she deems as a more authentic sense of duty: a desire to join her people on the battlefield. Though it's a significant risk having her brother, the rightful heir to the Norwinian throne, out in the fray, Anona worms her way into the cause, her naive and optimistic concept of war thinning as she quickly learns that the life of a soldier is anything but gratifying.

Kezia Vittori has been in this war since the beginning, a sharpshooter and fighter with French resistance since she could remember Germany breaching the country. However, her expertise and knowledge is valuable of the pacific line from years of anthropological exploration with her father. Despite wanting to stay and fight for her home country of Italy and for her romani people, despite her country turning to fascism, Kezia is sent away to America to join the Marine Division on the pacific frontline. There she sees and experiences a very different war and understands that she isn't the only one suffering in silence.
