It's the summer of 1943. 13 year old Helen is just finishing up school. The US has been involved in WWII for just a little under a year, and Helen's father left as soon as a request went out for enlistment. She comes home one day to find her mother waiting to give her some unexpected news. "Is it Dad?" Helen asked. "Helen, honey, it's not dad," replied her mother. "At least, it's not only about him. But...there's going to be some changes around here...and they are connected to some choices your dad has made." She sighed. "Or rather been forced into," Helen heard her murmur.

After being rescued by the Allies, he is mistaken for a German spy and imprisoned until he can prove his true identity. In the meantime, his young wife receives a telegram that he had been killed. When he is finally released, he comes back to the States only to discover his wife has remarried, so he decides to head back to Belgium to find his true love.
