Phases of the Heart

Since the beginning of time, the goddess Gae had blessed mankind. Her gift to her children were tools to aid them in their survival in a barren world.
Each gift was different and soon jealousy and greed consumed the hearts of man. A devastating war broke out amongst them and as a result many innocents lost their lives. Very few survived and swore an oath to protect life as they once knew it by rejecting the goddess and her gifts.
All use of Gae's gifts was strictly forbidden within the newly formed empire. Peace was established and as time went on truth faded into legend. Gae was soon forgotten and her gifts faded from existence.
All was perfect until one day a man lost all that he cared for.
"He felt a burn in his chest as his skin began to darken with permanent jagged swirls. The markings he now wore were born out of pain and the flames that slowly engulfed his body changed everything the empire had worked for."
