Reload is a flash fiction about what humanity would do with the ability to manipulate other planets. The theme of Reedsy's weekly short story contest on August 31st was flash fiction, meaning the story had to be under 1500 words. This piece was inspired by my astronomy class.

Starpiercer: Sunlight's Edge
Nobody said Rock Hauling would be easy. Throughout settled space, terraforming is the fuel that drives the interstellar economy. For some worlds, this is easy. For others, lacking resources, or on the periphery, this is an unattainable dream. Through the eyes of workers, astronauts and intellectuals, Sunlight's Edge follows an attempt to revitalize the crumbled terraforming project of the barren, poverty-stricken and resource-poor planet of Tylo. To carry this out, the beggared planetary government has commissioned the crew of the aging, if powerful asteroid-cracker Caroline Rowland to make the three-month journey to a distant asteroid belt and tug a selected asteroid back into orbit for conversion into a space station. This is difficult enough by itself, but located in a strategic demilitarized zone between two rival interstellar hegemons, Tylo and it's project may be the flashpoint for a conflict of apocalyptic proportions, with the Caroline Rowland and her crew as the spark that lights the tinder. This is the debut novella for the world of Starpiercer, a planned series of novels set in the 200-world region of Solace with accompanying illustrations, sketches, maps, technical details and more. Read along to meet alien species, experience real and speculative technologies, and follow a sprawling interconnected narrative over multiple novels and multiple series, with fully realized histories, culture groups, physics, biology, anthropology and thousands of pages of worldbuilding. When a prestigious research group decides they want a turn, they ask Alex Gallegos to lead the team. Perfectly qualified and haunted by their past, Alex accepts, hoping to make up for old mistakes and get just a little further from the earth they've left behind. Two months into the seven-month mission, the team is struggling with discontent, damaged equipment, and blizzards acting less and less like normal weather. Ada, a cashier in a consumer-tech dystopia, uses electro-pulse capabilities on a revenge mission against her father. Along the way, she hopes to discover the source of her power. Ada's life changes with her new abilities. She blames her father for her husband's death, and fears being discovered by the Prominent-run State. Unusual citizens are labeled N.A., never to be seen again. Yet, Ada has little to lose when her mother lands in the hospital and needs money for a new synth. She drives to Atlanta, intent on finding her father and making him pay. However, he's no longer the alcoholic she remembers. Moretz has transformed into a Congressman with a family and a new name, ready for a Senator's seat. Ada's scheme lands her on the N.A. list, leads a stranger to stalk her, and stunts her relationship with her newfound siblings. I'm twenty years old, a college student, and one of the people chosen for a purpose the Federation kept hidden from humanity for decades. We were never simply rescued but being prepared. An intergalactic war is spreading across the universe, and the Federation is running out of soldiers. The species they sent before us were destroyed faster than expected. Now, they want humans to take their place. My friends and I were selected because we can resist psychological manipulation better than most, but there's no time for ordinary military training. So, the Federation created something else, Safira, a beautiful moon transformed into a massive survival ground where every trial is designed to push us beyond our limits. There are no exceptions. Not for the young. Not for the old. Not for the innocent. Once you're chosen, you play. And the rules are simple: Adapt, survive, and become useful. My friends and I thought our bond would be enough to carry us through. We were wrong about that, too. Because Safira doesn't just test strength. It tests loyalty, trust, far, and how far someone is willing to go when survival demands a sacrifice. I thought the worst thing waiting for us was the war beyond the stars. SmackDown: Back to Our Roots
Our previous two SmackDowns were both massive successes, and it's high time for another. You might remember the last one was heavy on the "game" elements, maybe even too heavy. This time we're going back to the basics and keeping it simple. It's just a motherfuckin' sci-fi SmackDown: a heated writing contest where contestants are given text-, music- and visual-based prompts, and then they need to write a short story around that, following which they're judged for their efforts and either move on to the next round or they get eliminated from the competition. But there's gotta be some kind of twist, right? For this one we're waxing nostalgic, we're looking back into our past. We're going back to our roots.Complete
No Man Left Behind
An intelligent entity by the name of Unilife captures the attention of an ancient alien race, who must decide whether or not to make first contact with the human race in order to stop this fast-learning, genocidal entity . . . And after encountering the entity themselves, Humanity must decide between fighting Unilife to the bitter end, or fleeing the Milky Way Galaxy altogether. This short story is a precursor to other writings to come. Essentially, I'm using my experience from writing this as a springboard for future planned projects. Sidenote: this project was originally drafted in Google Docs. For some reason, when copying over to Wattpad, Wattpad converts all the em dashes to regular hyphens. Be on the lookout for that, as it completely slaughters the meaning of certain sentences and phrases which use em dashes. Do you believe the government watches you through your phone, your TV? Do you believe the government manipulates society unbeknownst to them? Do you believe people fall off the face of the earth to become the next experiment? Do you believe those people gain extraordinary abilities but are kept for the government's gain? Do you believe they take the smartest people away to utilize their immense knowledge? How about keeping secrets of otherworldly beings? Do you think they have them imprisoned as well? The answer to all of these questions is, most likely. But one can only discover these answers if they find themselves locked in the very place that holds these secrets. In the very place that is speculated but never spoken of. The very place with all of the control, all of the darkest realities hidden from you to remain in ignorant bliss. In the Facility.
