Tra i più interessanti esemplari dell'arte siculo-normanna, è considerato uno dei monumenti simbolo di Palermo. Confinante con l'antica cinta muraria medievale sudoccidentale della città, il complesso di S.Giovanni degli Eremiti è situato nei pressi di Palazzo dei Normanni nel tratto un tempo attraversato dalle acque del Kemonia, uno dei due fiumi che un tempo attraversavano la città (oggi interrato).
