The orphaned Mina grew up under the care of Sema, a woman who takes in strays and educates them in the ways of survival. In the poor areas of Tarnhold, survival often equates to hired killing. The Noble District stands atop a rocky outcrop, and the noisy working districts cluster at its base, harnessing where it can the power of the River Tarn that is channeled down the Face; the sheer wall of rock that can only be traversed using ancient hand-cut paths. Magic is secret, and dark here - Iconomancers practice the art of summoning creatures made of pure shadow from the darkness into solid form, in order to do the bidding of the summoner. A creature of shadow sits on the throne of Tarnhold - a secretive figure known only as Torold, who is rarely seen. A chance encounter with a band of people dedicated to destroying shadow creatures and toppling Torold's rule leads Mina into a world where she has to question everything she has always relied on, and make a final decision that will change the city, and the lives of its inhabitants, forever.

In the magitech capital of Tan'thalon, strength is spectacle-and survival is never guaranteed. When young noble Talia Surifarah sneaks beyond the safety of her station, she witnesses a living legend: the Diviner, a blind arena champion whose mastery of earth and combat defies all reason. But the city's wonders hide brutal truths. As deserts creep closer, swallowing towns without explanation, Talia learns that power alone cannot stop what is coming. Attacked in Tan'thalon's rain-soaked alleys and pushed to the brink, she is saved by the Diviner herself-an elementalist whose discipline and instinct eclipse everything Talia has been taught. Bound by duty, shadowed by a controlling guardian, and driven by a world on the edge of ruin, Talia must choose who she will become. A sheltered paladin of noble blood... or something more. The sands are moving. Legends walk unseen. And the first step toward destiny is learning how to stand.
