Bonnie Pearson has toted her stainless-steel vacuum all over Franklin, from the Falls side's modest bungalows to the mansions of Franklin Heights. She's seen good and bad in the city -- though makes no special claim on telling one from the other. She believes in leaving people to their business.

The Glassers are a fun-loving bunch from the Heights, whose carefree lives bear little resemblance to Bonnie's own. When the family's unruly children hatch a plan to sabotage their parents' venture, she faces a decision: use her special access to the household to stop it, or let the Glassers' laissez-faire parenting style run its course?

The Cleaner is the first entry in the Franklin saga.

---------------

Welcome to Franklin: a city in full. Grace and pettiness, ambition, despair. Threats. Hunger. Heroism. Six sorts of love. More children every day. The NFL's Franklin Federals -- Go Feds! The roaring Shawnee, which never floods Franklin Heights but routinely devastates the Falls side.

You've passed through before, reader. Now come a bit farther off the interstate.

"It was a mistake..." She told her mother, folding her hands into each other. "Marrying him..." Her mother said nothing, she simply sat there as her only daughter stood across from her, on the verge of collapsing from bruised ribs and cracked shins. "Mom." She wanted to reach out, softly tap her aging mother. Though that was the restriction of her life. The binding stereotype that she was gentle and slow to anger. In reality, what wanted to explode from her ribs was a scream of an animal, and the tears of repressed rage and fear. She wanted to throw her body onto the floor, but the thought made her damaged body ache more. There was no response from her mother. The deafening silence reminded her of her own quietness as her husband shouted at her, his fists bloody. He told her that she was only a tool for his amusement and a money-whore for her indigent family. She was nothing else but a tool for both parties. And she was starting to believe him. --------------------- Sarah Johnsen's life spirals from the normal gritty resilient fight to a serene wonderland. On the outside, she's married to a kind family with untold riches, but on the inside, her husband is the devil himself. Forcefully married at 18, Sarah was forced to kill her own dreams of becoming a doctor in order to bind her poor family to the rich bastards of Glendale by marrying their youngest; Oliver Grean. Their arrangement had the ability to brew the largest timespan of misery any of them has ever known. From lost toddlers to paid staged kidnappings, the binding of the two families, the Johnsen's and the Grean's created a mixture of chaos, confusion, sorrow, fear, grief, and dangerous rage. And there seems to be no haven to escape to. Or is there? [18+ You've been warned.] "So that's it? You're just going to walk away from this? From us?" His laugh is bitter, a far cry from the usual genuine sound I've grown used to. I take a step back, not liking how close he's gotten, and run a hand through my already messy hair. "What did you expect? That we could somehow make this work?" I desperately wanted that to be true, but everything was so damn confusing right now. I didn't know what the right thing was. What would my parents have done in this situation? "Whatever this is?" Mason steps forward, forcing me to take another step back until I hit the wall. He's too close-way too close. He leans in, his minty breath mixed with cologne brushing against my face. "This-whatever's between us-is just as real as everything else, whether you want to believe it or not." ___________________ Eighteen-year-old River Banks has survived the streets of Chicago by learning one hard truth: the only person she can count on is herself. Living in a run-down apartment with her shady uncle, River notices something is wrong when he starts disappearing for days after a night of fear. She suspects he's involved with dangerous people. Enter Mason O'Neal, a ruthless 20-year-old who inherited a black-market weapons empire from his father. No one dares cross him-except Jonathan Banks, River's uncle, who steals something that could destroy Mason's operation. Mason is ready to take Jonathan out, but when River gets caught in the middle, his plans take a turn. As danger closes in, an unexpected connection sparks between Mason and River-one that may change both their fates.
