The Avatar is the master of all four elements. Along with every Avatar there are four Guardians, each master of one element.  The Guardians are given the tasks to guide and protect the Avatar. Together, they kept the balance in the world.

But everything changed the day the Fire Nation  attacked, disrupting the balance in the universe. When the world needed him most, the Avatar vanished and left the Guardians to fight against the Fire Nation. 

That was a hundred years ago. 

Everything has changed.
