Supernaturals are those who were infected but somehow adapted and reflected the bacteria, which lead them to survive from it. Having oddly fast regeneration compared to normal humans. Supernaturals may have also been just born with that ability from their parents or ancestors. Those who don't adapt to this bacteria turn out as mutants. As we don't know when the bacteria may strike we now have supernaturals to defeat these evil beings...
