100 years after the destruction of all human civilization at the hands of a nuclear war, the people living in a bunker endearingly nicknamed the "ark," resources have been contaminated by a sickness quickly spreading through the bunker. The few unaffected, and possibly immune, inhabitants realize that in order to survive they must go above ground.
Kalen has dreamed of the Above for years. He's always been curious of the crisp air or the soft grass he'd only read about in stories. Many people wrote him off, saying the Above was a lifeless wasteland with air too dirty to believe. Now he has no choice but to go to the Above.

Every three years a group of two-hundred teens get sent to Earth. After spending two years on Earth, you can choose to go back onto the Ark or to stay on Earth. Most don't survive the first week. They get to either join a Clan, create a new Clan or go solo. If your name is called out, you have to go down. You have no choice. Almost everyone joins a Clan or makes a new Clan. Nobody goes solo, unless you absolutely have to. Or if no Clan accepts you. Every animal on Earth wants to kill humans, they have all mutated after the Nuclear War, all the ones that survived, and are out for human flesh and blood. Bastien Water's name gets called out during the Choosing and he has to try to survive on Earth. While his family grieves thinking that Bastien won't survive but he's out to prove them wrong. "Stop, stay b-back," I try to say confidently but I can't even breath right. Realizing he won't listen I start to turn around planning to make a break for it.
