It is set after 2x16 and is a slight AU as everything else which happens later on in the season doesn't. Eventual SwanQueen.
After Cora's death, Regina shuts herself off, not even attempting to see Henry or enact revenge on Snow through her grief. Being alone in that large - now empty - mansion and having given up on practically life itself she spirals: thoughts which started off as distant memories of her Mother's abuse soon escalate to when she was married. It frightens her, depresses her and she feels alone- trapped.

Regina Mills: 34 years old. Teaches English and creative writing. She is very strict with her students and demands focus and order in her classes. She wants her students to excel. Regina has walls build around her heart, to protect herself from heartbreak and pain, which causes her to miss out on the things that doesn't cause pain, but has the potential to, like love and friendships. She has one friend, Kathryn, who's also a teacher. Regina's father died when she was young, and her mother is a cold-hearted woman. Regina knows that her mother only wants what's best for her, but her own idea of what's best isn't the same as her mother's. They don't have much contact anymore. Despite all, Regina has a big heart and feels things deeply. She wants to help her students the best she can. Emma Swan: 17 years old. About to start her senior year in high school. She was adopted by Mary Margaret Blanchard and David Nolan when she was 14. They started fostering her when she was 13. Before that, Emma was always bouncing from bad foster homes to group homes. Like Regina, Emma has wall around her heart because of her very turbulent childhood. She doesn't trust easily and has a hard time letting people in - parents as well as friends. She has two best friends - Belle and Ruby - who was very welcoming when Emma first came to Storybrooke. They introduced her to their friends, making sure she never felt alone. Regina Mills had spent her whole life fighting Love, or Evil. When she was younger she fought for the love she had for Daniel, and tried her hardest to fight her mother's evil, ultimately ending in losing Daniel. For a while, she tried to fight the evil that began festering inside after the loss, and she lost that battle too. Then, for years she fought the love that Snow White and Prince Charming had for eachother, doing everything in her incredibly vast power to try and ruin it for them. Everything she did fought off love, deep down she felt unworthy of it, even from her own son who she truly loved but still kept at arm's length. When she met Emma Swan, it was different. Emma didn't even try to suck up to the mayor, she didn't care about Henry's stories of her evil-doing, though she did believe him. She wasn't scared of Regina, so she had no love to fight. It felt wrong, but for that very reason, Regina found herself with fondness for Emma. How odd, that the younger woman's lack of love caused the older woman to become fascinated. It felt wrong, and it felt scary, and Regina Mills didn't like feeling scared.Complete

After the twins and their mother return to Storybrooke, they are completely unaware that two enemies had made their way there. One of the strangers is, however, familiar to Athena and she isn't happy about seeing them again. A stranger arrives in town, who knew everyone and hated them all, and wanted to get rid of them. It isn't long until Mr Gold is ready to cash in his favor with the twins, to find his daughter. Mr Gold, the twins, and Henry travel to New York where the twins are reunited with a familiar face, Henry's biological mother. Elias' life becomes more complicated when Henry's mother is engaged to a man, who also wanted to destroy Storybrooke's magic, along with the stranger.
