When the population crossed the twelve billion mark, a disease destroyed Earth's population and the world as we know it. A new Earth was created, one ruled by martial law and the 'common good.' The rules are simple in this world, but so important. Children know them before they can talk. They have to, if they want even a chance at survival.

Ember knows the rules well. When she contracts a new strand of the disease, she takes to the forest to avoid being black-bagged and sent to one of the 'camps' in the Undesirable Domain, meeting a band of fugitives along the way. As everything falls around them, they must make choices they never before imagined in a world that left them behind.
