My entry for the #PlanetOrPlastic contest for National Geographic.
In 500 words or less, we were asked to write and share a story, may it be real or fiction that was inspired by the photos that were presented. I suck at writing short stories (they tend to get away from me and turn out much longer than I originally intended, so this was quite the challenge), but I managed, and I really like how it turned out.

WHY ARE WE KILLING MOTHER EARTH?
It's amazing what fresh air, nature's beauty, and a starry sky can do to clear the cobwebs from one's mind. It has been years since I saw the Milky Way, and even longer since I canoed in northern Ontario. One week of wilderness camping in Georgian Bay is sufficient to set me off on a mission to save mother earth. It's as if nature and the universe conspired to spur me into action. Avani looked at the pizza store in front of her. Many passed by her, giving her glares and weird looks but Avani didn't care. All she could think about was food. And how her own step-mother disowned her. And the nurse's horrified face. And how warm her toes would be if she had just one match. Sighing, she walked to her corner around the garbage dump of a random store and laid down. She shut her eyes, not wanting to open them ever again. -ˋˏ✄┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ Avani was just an ordinary girl, living in an ordinary life That is until she started barfing up garbage, oil, and plastic. Her own step-family left her with no money, no water, nothing to survive. No one wanted her, especially if she was a freak. Pollution, pollution, and pollution. How can you stop that? There's no way. But then, a shiny object dropped from the sky, and that was the answer to her question. But she had a weakness. And that weakness will bring her down, it'll destroy her inside and out. If she doesn't learn to control it, it'll control her. But there was something she didn't get. The Earth is dying, yet humanity survives. Pollution and radiation run rampant on the surface. The government rations food and clean air for everyone. The glass domes provide some sense of security, but they are only for the rich who can afford the astronomical price of providing precious clean air to a whole city. Nym and her family live outside the dome when the disease breaks out. Spreading through the Minor City Shelter and then to Shelter's around other cities, nothing seems capable of stopping it. People are going mad and dying off like flies. There's no cure they can find. They only know one thing. Their last precious resource is going to be the death of them.
