Homophobic school bullies relentlessly bully 16-year-old Jay, so when Enya, a goth and rumoured Satanist, hands Jay an occult tome called The Book of Evil Spirits, Jay sees a way to punish his tormentors--summoning a demon. But he hesitates. Jay has read all sorts of dodgy things on the internet about black magic. Meanwhile in Hell, the demon Scalar rules alongside his father, The Devil. Scalar's underworld turns to cinders when his brother shows up, usurps The Infernal Throne and imprisons The Devil. Losing his top-spot on Hell's Infernal League of Evil, the rankings that decide who is the evilest and will rule Hell, Scalar escapes into exile. After an incident involving a punch to the head, a fish n' chip shop siege, and the entire school (it felt like anyway) chanting "gay boy", "gay boy", "gay boy", Jay swallows his fear and conjures a demon. Scalar answers the call and agrees to help Jay exact revenge, but at a price--Jay's immortal soul. Each act of vengeance helps Scalar to claw his way back up The Infernal League of Evil as the festering darkness in Jay grows.

For centuries, the High Mages of the Los Angeles Circle has summoned spirits to act as their slaves or do their bidding. For centuries these mages have battled in secret for supremacy and have ruled the entirety of the city. Kain has changed this natural balance, by being the first recorded spirit-human hybrid. He's hated by his father who he refuses to call father, he's hated by his peers for being less than human, and he's ignored by the spirits for being too human. He's never accessed his spirit form, he's never had pizza or French fries, and he's definitely never had a friend. Then there's Jayden. He is a mage of the High Circle who was raised as a farm boy. He is fighting against two, probably three, other mages to form a contract with Kain, and prove his superiority as a Terran mage. He also treats Kain like a human. He wants to be Kain's friend, and he actually cares about what Kain thinks. And that, that terrifies Kain. Will Kain accept this new friend, or will he fall back into the ways his father taught him and sign a contract with a mage who will treat him like the spirit he is?
