In a perfect world, Beau Karlin and her brother Nathan would still be living with their biological parents in their childhood home back near London. Nathan wouldn't be a permanent resident in the 'Lake House: Home for the mentally ill' and Beau wouldn't be trapped in a nightmare relationship. The world isn't perfect though, that they know for sure. And as Nathan continues to struggle with his mental stability and Beau finds it harder to remain strong the pair need a way out and they need it fast. Hearing voices coming from the locked attic bedroom that once belonged to a boy who drowned himself is seemingly just a story that comes as the result of Nathan's over-reactive mind. Being rescued from her abusive lover by a boy that smells like fresh lake water is just something Beau overlooks but perhaps Japan's 'Red string of fate' theory is actually a scary reality... Jo's brothers are his world. He's spent his entire life sacrificing everything to give them the life he's never had. Having battled through a horrific childhood, his every breath is for the benefit of his brothers, who gave him a reason to live through those years. It is an act of selflessness that throws him in the path of a woman who actually sees him, not just his scars. Rachel not only recognizes his worth, but is willing to step into his life and share his experiences, no matter how difficult. Despite their mutual attraction, the past and present seem determined to keep them apart. Jo faces another battle: this time against prejudice, past threats, and most powerful of all, the demons inside his head.
