Year 1999. Free States of America. Five-year-old Charles Brigham lives in a fractured nation still bleeding from the effects of civil war, where Albuquerque, New Mexico is one of the few remaining states of what was commonly known as the US. When his relationship with his older brother Joseph deteriorates into something dark and unmanageable, Charles finds himself stuck with no way out. Panic-stricken, he creates an imaginary friend : You. Your name is Mushroom, his loyal right-arm, his confidant in all the decisions he will ever make in his life. You are however not the kind of friend who comforts or counsels. You do not judge, you do not meddle, you do not save him from himself. You simply. look on. As Charles ages, you watch him descend into something that you no longer know. You watch as he justify increasingly heinous choices. You listen to his rationalization as he changes from a lost child into something or someone who can commit inhumane acts. And through it all, you remain silent. Because that's what you do. That's what you've always done.
