Leah's parents were killed when she was 7, and she is determined to find the killer. Leah has been in and our of foster homes because of "reckless behavior" and people label her as "a different kind of special." At least that's what the newspaper states. She just got kicked out of her favorite foster home, because of a little misunderstanding. Turns out when you pull a gun on an "unarmed" person, you are the one who gets in trouble. But, recently the police temporarily closed the case about her parents because it, " has officially gone cold." Now Leah is 17 and just found new evidence. A photo of her and her parents when she was about 4 or 5 and she notices something odd about it. But along the way, she meets somebody she can't help falling in love with. Can she solve the case, or end up with her parents.

This story is not getting the attention it deserves, so I am attempting to "re-brand" it. Maybe no one "gets" it. If you want to read about "Normal" teenagers, maybe this isn't for you, it's more complicated than that. It's about a teenager who doesn't fit it, but doesn't want to, who has the best two friends that anyone could have. Who watched his father lose his job in the Recession and then loses his home, and how he copes, especially when he learns that their new house is haunted and the ghost is in his room. Michael was an average kid, although he's always stood out. He was a school jock but also a skater whose long blond hair almost reaches his waist. When his parents lived in a house in a home owners association like all his other friends, life seemed normal. Then his father lost his job and suddenly those "friends" weren't there anymore--except for his two best friends, Short Round and Dewey. The three are skaters, good ones, who live for girls and their skateboards. They're also basically good kids who take pride in being different without paying attention to it. When Michael loses his home and his family has to move they have his back. And they are there for him when the ghost girl starts following him around. Mariah was murdered when she was just 15, her remains were never found, although no one but her and her ghost friend, Crazy Girl, know where their bodies are buried. The house Michael now lives in is the one where she lived with her family, and her old room is now his. She appears to him one night, trying to taunt him, but against her will she is falling in love with the boy who lives in her old room. Slowly the two begin to fall in love and Mariah tells him her story, and of the hidden danger that lies up the street from him.
