Not everyone has a soul mate.
If you do, though, a black and white mark representing something special to your soulmate appears on your arm when you turn fourteen years old.
At first, it is a smudge, but over time it gains detail. Only when you meet your soulmate, does it come to focus.
When you grow closer to them, the tattoo grows into an elaborate masterpiece.
And only once you fall in love does it start to have a pop of color.
That is, if you fall in love.

The soulmark is rather small, barely noticeable if you're not taking a closer look at it. At the age of 16 you are able to communicate with them by writing on your body. However you can't write any names on there, not yours or one of your friends. If you do then it would only appear as scribbled lines for your soulmate. In this society, everyone has a soulmate. And the way to find yours is just look. Along with a soulmate, everyone has a small tattoo on their cheek with a symbol. Some could be a star, a flower, a yinyang, a fish, or even waves. There are so many people that the symbols are almost limitless. The tattoos don't care about gender or number. There could be gay matches, and there could even be polyamorous matches. The tattoos will tingle when you are near to your sm. And they will glow if you have found only one of your sm's if your match was poly. The trick is, you don't get the tattoo until you are 16. And even if you are near your match, as long as one of you are not of age, your tattoo will not tingle. Also, they are normal tattoos (except you don't get it or choose it, it just appears) so you can get rid of it. But if you do, your sm won't die but they will get very sick. The main characters of this story, Violet West (18) and Harper Black (20), both have a flame tattoo on their cheek. They live in the same state but for 4 years Harper paniced because she couldn't find her match. She wasn't sure if it was because her sm wasn't of age yet or if her sm lived far away. For 2 years Violet also paniced but she knew that some people don't find their sm for 5-10 years after they come of age, so she wasn't as scared as Harper.
