There was but one witness to the murder of Richard Mallory, which happened months ago. It was his adolescent son, Alfred, who saw it all happen. A stranger wearing a dark cloak was responsible. This he knows with all his heart, so he begins an investigation to do his late father justice.
At first, the whole affair is nothing more than smoke and mirrors. He is no closer to finding the culprit than anyone. Then, one day, he runs into the murderer himself. It sets off a chain of events that send Alfred to fight an ancient kinship shrouded in mystery which is much darker than what could ever be found at humanity's worst.
Realising that he cannot possibly bring down the murderer by himself, it is up to him to make connections that give him a fighting chance. Along the way, these new connections become close friends, but some of these friends have histories that are just as dark as the kinship. As it turns out, that darkness may be the key to bringing down the murderer, the kinship, and doing his father justice.

Charley Beckett-perfectly sane, normal, Charley Beckett-counts everything. Years since her parents' unsolved murder: fifteen. Bodies she's found dead: three. Puncture wounds on each of their throats: two. People who believe her when she says vampires are to blame: zero. Since her parents' murder, she's tried to get past her hallucinations, PTSD, and her reputation as the little red-haired girl police found screaming about monsters that didn't-surely, couldn't-exist. But there's this story-conspiracy theory-swirling around her small town that says her father was part of a secret government experiment, one that would prove vampires weren't legends at all. And Charley can't move on. Especially when she stumbles upon a dead girl with the same bloody puncture wounds as her parents-and someone follows her home. Left with no one who believes her, Charley breaks into the abandoned facility where her father once worked, desperate to find the truth. But she's not the only one after answers. Victor, a handsome vampire, is there to convince her that not only is she perfectly sane, but he's the only one that can save her from those who seek to abuse her connection to the government's experiments. However, when Victor knows details about her parents' death that only the murderer could, Charley will need to learn to trust herself, no matter how crazy her thoughts may seem. If she doesn't, she'll go from counting bodies to counting her last heartbeats...one...two...three...nothing. "Maybe someone heard my screams or maybe the reaper wears combat boots..."

Meet Kyle and Kate, two 15 year old students who have a gift for thinking fast, quick, and smart. Oh, and meet the other 18 kids in their class. Some call them genius, some call them annoying. PART 1 The year starts off bad enough, that is, with earthquakes and snowstorms. And finally, when things starts to clear up, the first murder occurs. Right in front of their eyes. It seemed obvious who did it, but as the murderer wrote her confession, a completely different murder occurs across town. Shocked, the police rush over to gather the evidence and clues, but before they even assemble their evidence, the police are led to another death. One by one, deaths occur around town, faster than the police can count. There's not much in common with all of the murders, only the fact that all of the victims come from one class. In the course on one year, the class of 18 shrinks drastically. PART 2 As summer vacation begins, the remains of the class split. Five students tell their stories of meeting new people, near death experiences, and funny incidences. PART 3 More than what meets the eye happened in the course of the summer. The class comes back to a new year, utterly shocked to find that 4 new students have joined their class. Everything starts out alright, but people are getting frantic. The government sent in spies to watch the class for suspicious behavior, two of them students themselves. Two other students are hired to try to figure things out on their own. What nobody realizes however, is what's important. As the year goes on, some of the students realize: -A secret passageway may not be limited to only the house. -The school has a basement -Falling down a flight of stairs can save lives A supposedly dead student wakes up from a coma, people start realizing things, all leading to the final, seemingly unimportant clue, that closed the gap from arresting the wrong person, to finding the real murderer.

Five years ago, Cairo Quimby disappeared without a trace. His family has neglected to speak of him since, running the slightly strange but unassuming hotel he grew up in as if nothing ever happened. Until Cairo, a lone wanderer roaming a lost and dangerous world, has a run-in at a diner with mysterious strangers who are after his stepfather ⸻ as it turns out, Richard Quimby has been hiding something, and hiding something valuable. He's broken the viciously enforced code of In-Betweens by whatever his hotel is harboring, and against his better judgment, Cairo's loyalty takes him back. Back to his dreaded childhood home, back to the place to which he swore he'd never return. Cairo's family is nothing ordinary. Strange things happen when they want them to, and impossible is a limit that simply does not exist in their plane of being. But it's this strangeness that he's been rejecting, that he's been trying to run from all these years. Unfortunately, whether he likes it or not, he must enlist the help of siblings who resent him to unveil the secrets behind the vendetta against his stepfather and fight the forces determined to tear his family apart. Oh, and of course, he has to participate in a race for inheritance privileges ⸻ something he never even wanted. Cairo's own past has come back to haunt him, tangled with everyone else's and a million times worse. Time is ticking, and there are sins to atone for, blood to be spilled. #ONC2024 - Prompt 13 Total Word Count: 40,310 #1 in #intrigue 2/24-3/21 © Ginger Beckett 2024
