Everyone has a soul mate, nobody is without. Mark knows that. He knows someone is out there, waiting for him. He can't wait to find that one magical person that will make him smile even through tears, that one boy that makes every sad day happy, the boy that he will one day call his husband.
Everyone has a soul mate, nobody is without. Ethan wishes he didn't, that he was an exception, that nobody was waiting for him. He doesn't know how to turn tears to laughter, doesn't know how to make sadness into happiness, doesn't know how to make someone smile. He doesn't even know how to love someone. He's never experienced love.

Mark Fischbach meets Ethan Nestor when he dies in a sudden car crash, only to wake up in a dark void. He's convinced himself his life is one without meaning, and that he was born just to be buried. So one day, when he decides to end it all, he is frankly surprised by the sudden apparition of his dead idol, Mark Fischbach, who tells him he has a whole year left to live. Ethan must work with himself to find a meaning to life, and on the way he teaches Mark a thing or two about living as well.
