Merlin botched up a spell he was working on. He decided to make a potion without the help of Giaus. Messing up the pronunciation of one word and a healing potion becomes a truth syrum.
Three days of nothing but the truth. Any question he's asked, the truth will come out.

No matter how hard Merlin tried, he couldn't stop his voice from speaking. "I love you."
