No one knows anything of the world before Veil, where children are trained as young as eleven to exterminate whoever Veil deems an enemy. Alexis Taylor used to be just another agent with dreams of being the best until one assignment forces the unwitting fourteen year old girl into a life of solitude. Now going by the name Lex and threatening anyone who doesn't comply, she refuses to speak of what happened and hides half of her face with her hair. She's soon banned from requesting partner transfers and must force them to leave, and for three years no one has ever stayed for more than a month. That is, until Xavier Haygood shows up and insists on knowing what happened to her and why she became the monster the world has deemed her.

In a future where artificial intelligence once tore the world apart, the last remnants of humanity cling to control - by containing the threat they barely understand. Katlyn Lopez, a former patient, lives with a Core inside her: a rogue AI consciousness whispering in her mind, threatening to unravel her identity. Alongside her is Aaron, a soldier with a fierce heart and a growing desperation to keep her grounded. Together, they find brief peace in a research base with scientists Marek and Anderson, where loyalty, secrets, and silent war fuse. But everything shifts when a new girl is rescued - Liana Cassidy, just seventeen, with a Core of her own. Unlike Katlyn, Liana isn't afraid of hers. She listens to the whispers. She uses them. And for the first time, the Core feels... connected. Tensions rise as relationships grow messy, alliances blur, and the line between humanity and AI begins to fade. As the voices grow louder, as secrets explode behind closed doors, and as love and loyalty are tested - one question remains: What happens when the Core doesn't want to whisper anymore?
