Sometime in our sci-fi future, though long ago by pokemon history, humans sent out a colony ship to settle an earth-like planet they detected. But something went wrong, and the ship crashed. When no one ever responded to their cries for help, or came for them, the colonists salvaged what they could and tried to settle a world that, much to their surprise, was already inhabited. They couldn't understand the beings who communicated only in sounds that reminded us of earth animals, so they assumed their intelligence was the same as the creatures they resembled, and captured them for labor. Maybe they recognized over time that most, if not all, of these beings were sentient, or maybe they didn't, but it wouldn't matter, because to a colonial perspective, they weren't human. They had argued human rights many times, but these creatures were not human. They couldn't even speak, right?
So life continued, and technology was developed for better capturing and enslaving the local life of this new and exciting planet. Somewhere around here, someone likely coined the term "pocket monsters" to describe these creatures. They began to train pokemon to fight each other; the wilds were a dangerous place without an equally matched being to fend off the feral ones. They were monsters, after all, and humans remembered that. There wasn't much room for sympathy, because these monsters were like horses, or dogs, or rabbits. For labor, or for defense, or for food.
It didn't matter.
They never tried space travel again; that worked out well enough the first time. Over time, the situation improved; maybe laws were put in place to regulate treatment of pokemon, but still no attempts to test the sentience of the planetary natives. And over time, humans forgot, or maybe stopped trying to remember, that they were colonists. Maybe they forgot about Earth. They had always been here, right? Where else could they have come from?
It didn't matter.

People and Pokémon have terraformed Mars. Their new challenge is to turn it into a world that anyone would want to live in. Six astronauts, who survived the battle for Mars against the criminal syndicate Cipher, have planned the Harmony project. It aims to introduce four things: wild Pokémon, a Pokémon League, Battle Frontier and Pokémon Contests. Two key members of Cipher escaped, however. They want Mars more than ever now it's terraformed. Team Plasma are also out there somewhere. It's horrible to don a mask. Most wear some kind of mask in their life--and for the most part, they're never of the best quality. All they cause is useless self-destruction and pain, but the good thing about them is that they can hide some ugly part of you that you don't want to show to the world. They're always a step down from what you think they'd be, always a notch lower than expectations, and always a lie to hide from the reality around us. ...of course, there are those that can see through those masks too, and it's supposed that Arceus created these humans to keep the world's sanity. That's all Avis wishes for, because it's nearly impossible to find any semblance of peace in this midst of war and chaos. To him, that's staying alone; staying out of others' business, and for the first seventeen years of his life, he's done that pretty well. § Avis can only hide in the shadow of his twin brother's strength, stranded in a country ravaged by war and destruction--and he tries to live his life in the darkness peacefully. He doesn't need to be noticed by everyone. The illusion of a functional, ideal life, however, is shattered when his family's balance is destroyed, and he thus dons his first mask. § For all his life, Avis had been taught that disaster was bad. There once was a prince, who fell in love with a girl. But she wasn't a princess. She was the hand maiden of a nobleman's daughter, who had eyes for the young prince. The prince and girl fell in love, but couldn't be together, for the nobleman's daughter grew jealous when she found out, and ordered them to be killed. This story was called "The Lover's Curse." As it passed down, generation through generation, it became known as only a legend, a myth.
