Kedzie Piper, a cynically sarcastic seventeen year old, takes a look back at the devastating last year of her life. Following a series of troubling experiences, including her first sexual experience with a boy (and a girl), she is disillusioned with the charmed life she lived as an obedient and happy daughter of very religious parents. She runs away and meets kind and intelligent Astrid, an artist for a traveling circus, whom she hopes will be her saving grace from her new and foreign depression.
