S-8 feels like she is out of place with the rest of the people on the island. She doesn't understand why she can't quite fit in, but she suspects it is because of her subdued nature, as well as her hidden disdain of the Routine. The Routine, a voice that tells S-8 what to do, is a constant plague on her thoughts. She would never be strong enough to disobey it on her own.
Malachi didn't wish to be spit out onto this strange island. Everything is very peculiar to him, including a girl who calls herself S-8. Will Malachi and S-8 get along? Or will they drive each other away? Because Malachi hates the Routine, and he will do anything to leave the island.
