Riverly trains as an apprentice healer.  Every day, she works tirelessly to mend the broken and bloodied Imperial soldiers who protect the Empire from the vicious forces of a radical cleric. And, every day, the war chews up and spits out the lives of conscripts.  

When a soldier appears in need of saving, Riverly's skills and quick thinking are not enough.  Exhausted and frustrated by yet another loss, she makes a rash decision that changes the trajectory of his and her fates:  She accidentally resurrects him from the afterlife.
 
The reward for her efforts?   The soldier orders Riverly by sword-point to meet the man commanding the Imperial forces, the Lord High Commander, a man known for his cunning and brutal tactics.  What Riverly finds in the mysterious commander, however, is something both familiar and treacherous. Where she can snatch life away from the grip of death, he can call upon the deadly shades of the netherworld to strip men of their souls. 

Riverly now must make a choice: Enter the Lord High Commander's service and win the war, while risking her humanity and freedom, or flee and allow the shadow of death to grow across the Empire and endanger everyone she loves.
