A new year has started, and weird things are starting to happen in the calm city of Spring Brooks. Kids AND adults go missing too often and Emmy White is getting concerned. The news breaks out: an invasion of creatures called Shadowlings is happening. These creatures come out at night and devour people that meet certain criteria, such as their type of blood, hair color, preferences, etc. The invasion starts slowly, and it lasts for a few months. But then, the Shadowlings start going full on. In just two, the country is almost completely deserted! Emmy was having a weekend of fun at her penthouse when they all start to find it weird that they aren't hearing anything, and then they finally are aware of the country's state. They escape their homes and struggle to survive since they all meet the criteria except 3 people of their friend group. After days, it finally hits them: the whole world is under attack by these Shadowlings. They have to survive, but they are young and don't know how. Will everyone stay safe or will the Shadowlings eliminate the human race?

This story is about a 16 year old girl named Melody Swift. Ever since her mother died, her so-called "father" started abusing her. Kids at school are cruel, they bully her brutally just because she's different. She simply waits for everything to get better, after all what's the point in trying when the world will do whatever they can to drag you down. Her only escape from this twisted reality is a creature named Shadow. A terrifying creature that is somehow more humane than the so-called humans around her. Shadow could easily take all her problems away, but Melody refuses to take the easy way out. That is, until she just couldn't take it anymore, she takes Shadow's offer and soon her life got better. Her bullies started disappearing, showing up dead in the woods. Their bodies badly mutilated, almost unrecognizable. Life at school started getting better, she finally had human friends and even a boyfriend. Her "father" was found dead at her house. The torture had finally ended.
