In the beginning stages of the invasion, one hundred years ago, the invisible, invincible, and indestructible demons took over the Western Hemisphere and pushed all of Asia into a corner, forcing a resurrection of the Old Magic that pushed back against the demons. Behind the borderlines, humans were safe. The ones instilled with combat magic would continuously leave the safety of the borderlines and fight, slowly but surely extending the reach of the borderline perhaps an inch every decade. But for all their gains the demons were there to push the borders back with their invisible hands and tear apart those that dared leave safety to oppose them.

Nekata Hiruko is a genin, a commoner ninja in the last villages of Japan. He is a master of chi magic and a skilled warrior but despises his job with all his heart. As a newly fledged ninja, he has a daily quota to fulfill: protect the borderline and kill one demon every week.

On the day he was given the quota, he crosses the borderline and goes farther than anyone had gone in a hundred years: all the way to Tokyo, the location of the first demon attacks. There, he discovers that he could see the demons, making him the one person with the potential of ending their reign over the world.

Just one problem: All he wants to do is go fishing.
