Bennie, a deserted 12 -year-old, who swears a lot ("Pass the fucking salt.") lives in a group home. A student counselor takes an interest in Bennie after a shattering three-hour session in the 'riot room.' That's the place to cool kids down after they 'blow.' The counselor wants to help but is in over his head and unsure of his actions. Bennie's desperate housemates include an 8-year-old who jealously smothered her baby brother to death, and a 12-year-old provocative sexually abused Lolita. And there were the other troubled boys, five of whom were in Bennie's dorm. The rookie counselor's anxious attempt to help Bennie resembles a Hail Mary pass in a tornado. One night, at bedtime, before he leaves the dorm, unthinkingly says, "Don't Forget to Say Your Prayers." Dead Silence. What do these children have to thank God for? No parents, family, or future. Bennie and the boys need help but at what cost? Will he make things worse? Will he screw things up? Find out what happens to the distressed Bennie and the counselor in this startlingly powerful story about loneliness, abandonment, hope, and painfully coming of age.
