Whilst the decision to move into a retirement village is a deeply personal one, and unique to each individual, the main deciding factors that residents put forward are security and health related. A 2013 industry report by McCrindle Baynes, confirmed that, "Seven out of the top 10 reasons for choosing the village accommodation option were physical health related."

It is very comforting for residents to know that there is a management team at hand that can arrange for assistance when needed, particularly medical assistance, home support and care services. Secondly, the physical features of a purpose-built retirement village with ramps, rails and age-friendly bathrooms, provide more physical comfort, independence and mobility than the old family home. Finally, the fact that you no longer have to do the mundane but time consuming, maintenance of your home like mowing the lawn or changing the light globe, or even cooking if you don't want to, reduces the daily stress levels and gives more time for enjoyable pursuits.

Matthew's doorway to change came to him in the form a woman who held up a mirror to him and showed him who he really was.She was a very fit, blonde, blue eyed, intelligent woman who was originally Russian. Victoria had seen more of life than Matthew had ever imagined. Victoria had imagined the un-imaginable and achieved it. She is still doing all those things that us mere observers have yet to have the courage to understand or commit to. He engaged. He pandered, he devoted himself, and in the end, Victoria devastated him. He was emotionally crushed. Matthew was heartbroken and the tears would not stop. He had a desire, but not the will to commit suicide. In the car he would wail. In the shower he would buckle and cry. In the aftermath, Matthew would steel his nerves with anti anxiety medication and long, long walks around the New South Wales city of Newcastle. From the house his parents owned to the city, to the beach and anywhere in between. He needed to be occupied, he needed to be tired. The construction workers would be listening to a sad some song on the radio (Dean Lewis - Be Alright, that's a good one to cry to), and he would want to stop and physically break down on the grass verge and go no further. Matthew needed to reconcile with best person he had ever meet. So, what was reflected in Matthews mirrored doorway? What door way was opened for him to look beyond his world view, and importantly how did it take so many years for him to see the person he was? Is this a love story? Yes. For Matthew absolutely. For Victoria, no. She did not love or care for him, and we can only guess that Matthew was company for a short period of time, and that amounted to 9 months of wonder, snoring, emotional roller coasting, photography, Salsa dancing, camping, trekking, long drives and fitness. Awesome!

Dad cleared his throat, looked down at his hands, and then to me, "Which means, we're moving," he said. I still don't get it. So I looked to Mom for a clue, but she remained unreadable. Elsa appeared excited by this news. Dad looked to me. "Easton, what do you think about that?" he asked, but I don't want to tell him how confused I am. So instead I ask, "When," thinking whatever it is must be happening soon. "Well, we are planning on renting the house to get a little income for it, so we need to look for renters. Your mother and I already found a new house for us to live in." There it is, the explanation. We're getting a new house, like an upgrade, but why? What's wrong with the house we have now?" I'm putting together the dates and we should be seeing potential renters soon. Uncle Rob's bringing by a For Rent sign tomorrow, so I need you two to clean up your rooms." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Well they want me to start next month, but they are forwarding my pay, so I'll have the money in advance. And here's where the other bit comes in," she told us. For some reason my eyes move from her animated face and I just watch her hands as she explains that with this job means more money, so we will be moving. "Where?" Luke and Damien said in unison. "Well, I've been in contact with this guy, who owns a house that was recently put on the market. He wants to rent it and it's really cheap." "Mom, we need details," Damien exclaimed, getting just as excited as Mom. "Okay, then get in the car and I'll show you our new house!" So we did.

People always say every life should be cherished. That every single one of them is equally fragile and precious. Like a beautiful glass sculpture or the blossoming flowers in spring. But the thing is, everyone's definition of beautiful is different. Some people prefer roses over orchids. Some of them like sculptures of people whereas others like sculptures of animals. And so there are times when even the most beautiful sculpture gets thrown away like trash or forgotten somewhere because they found one that's prettier. The beautiful flowers that bloomed in spring will wither away and eventually become nothing but dust. There are times when a sculpture in itself could be really beautiful but a tiny flaw will make people deem it as a "mistake". The flowers that are left to wither away just because they miss a leave, or because they aren't the right size or the right colour. So you see that saying about every life being equally precious?, yeah that only counts for the "perfect" ones. Still some of these faulty sculptures and broken flowers managed to make it into the world. They would be facing the harsh reality of this world and would have to fight to survive. Some of them would unfortunately lose this fight in the end, leaving to a faraway place in hopes to find peace and quiet. Still just being able to make it this far in this harsh world is something to be proud of, as friends and family will forever remember these brave individuals who fought hard to survive until the very end. - Kaylee de Leeuw
