No one answers.
"I will!" I push through the crowd, stepping on people's feet and pushing their shoulders. "I will.." I say more calmly.
"Oh, you will?" He snickers. "You think you can beat me?" He gestures at himself. "You?"
"Yeah." I reply grimly.
"Okay, then let's get this over with." He grins, showing his yellow teeth.

Melanie (aka Mel) has just moved to Indiana. She, is eighteen and is in her last year of high school. Her mom is a nurse and works a lot of late shifts. They had to move for a couple of reasons.
