In the 75 years since the creation of the OASIS, the human race has retreated to near-extinction as the planet fell apart around them.  A simulated world makes for an easy way to avoid dealing with the harshness of reality.  Perhaps it can also provide one last chance at salvation, whether humanity wants it or not.
