|||2021 WATTYS SHORTLIST||| Not everyone's high school experience involves hot romance, parties and big plans for the future. Some kids are shy. Some kids are socially awkward. Some kids have heavy burdens placed on them by their families or their religions. This is the tale of two of those kids.

In her senior year, Sabrina Himmelschein feels like she has no privacy and no life of her own. She lives in one of San Francisco's iconic Postcard Row houses, in an Orthodox Jewish family with high standards and expectations. At a speech tournament she meets Neil Cannon, who lives up north among the vineyards of Sonoma County, where his parents happily work in the wine industry, despite being teetotaling Mormons.

They form a bond, but reluctantly break it; the religious and cultural gulfs between them are too wide to bridge. Four years later, their dreams of changing the world reduced to retail jobs selling socks and cologne, they unexpectedly meet again.

After the families and faiths they've depended on their whole lives have let them down in a dramatic way, Neil and Sabrina struggle with an important question: should they feel guilty about being happy to be back together?

Graduation is right around the corner for Ada Sinclair. She's spent all of high school saving up for her dream college and skipped high school traditions to keep her grades up for scholarships. When the acceptance letter came in the mail, every ounce of her effort felt worth it. She's spent her life being a small fish in a small pond, but eagerly awaits September so she can spread her wings and move on to big things. When her mother comes home to reveal she is in the early stages of Huntington's Disease, a disease passed down from her own mother, she can't hide from the truth she may be next in line. It is then that her plans and dreams for her future shatter. Nothing is more important to her than her family, people who need her and her strength more than Ada needs her dreams. Not knowing how much time she has left with her mother, she makes the choice to remain at home and has no regrets. Only the fear of uncertainty. Feeling like the world is crashing down on her, Ada turns to the man who's been there for her for the last four years. He'd given her the confidence she needed to become the woman she is now, held her while she cried and has been there through every struggle she's faced. He seems fully willing to be there for her again, even if that means risking his career as a teacher; her teacher. As their friendship grows stronger, they find strength in one another and a connection they can only ignore for so long, a connection that comes with life-changing consequences for them both.

For Rachel Beckett the Olympics was a huge defining moment in her life, something she had been working tirelessly towards since she was five years old. Winning that gold medal meant everything to her and when she finally got there and choked, her life was turned upside down. What do you do when everything you've worked for your whole life is gone and you instantly go from being America's Sweetheart to a laughing stock? Well I can tell you what Rachel did. She ran. She moved to Texas, changed her hair color, started going by her middle name and tried to forget she ever did figure skating. When she finally went back to her hometown three years later to visit her family, she ran into her old figure skating coach and he convinced her that she could have a second chance to make her dream of Olympic gold happen. Falling in love with the new hockey coach wasn't part of the plan. Making her comeback ended up being a lot harder than she thought it would be, especially when family turmoil, anxiety, tragedy and love get in the way, but maybe a second chance and someone to believe in her is all she needs to make it happen. **** Very mature themes & sexual content - 18+ only!
