Danon Halldon does not live on 21st century Earth, he lives in a world in which many who do would consider fantasy. Danon is the protector of the town  that he lives in, given the title by the man who rules the town, simply known by most as the Elder. 
Danon had been taught that to serve the Elder was an honour and that the Elders' cause was an ethically right one, until he was sent on a quest which made him question the Elder's intentions.
