Beatrice and Tobias were friends in abnegation. When Tobias turned 16 to escape his abusive father he left abnegation - left Beatrice. After that Marcus needed a new punching bag. He decides that Beatrice would be perfect for that. Beatrice doesn't know to look out for Marcus, because  Tobias never warned her.
