Stará legenda vypráví o jezdci, oděném v černém, na vysokém elegantním, nýbrž černém koni. Tento jezdec zvěstoval příchod absolutního Zla. Tohoto jezdce ale zapudili a později i zabili archandělé a jeho duši uzamkli v Carcare. Černému chodci je však souzeno znovu povstat.
Pro sedmnáctiletou Caroll to jsou jen pohádky, které ji vyprávěla její adoptivní matka. Oba její rodiče zmizeli, když byla ještě nemluvně. Jenže stejný osud potkal i její pěstouny. Je to jen náhoda? Jenže mizí lidé po celém Jorviku. Má to snad spojitost s Černým jezdcem a jeho předpovězeným návratem? To mladá dívenka brzy zjistí. Ale nebude na to sama.
