When eighty-nine years ago a disease from the far cities of the south wiped out a good ninety percent of the human population of Ter, everyone thought it was over. People fled their cities and abandoned their homes. Technology was lost, science forgotten. Even so many years later, there is fear of the cities of old, and they decay and age as the human population struggles to achieve numbers above thirty thousand, scattered across the continent that is Ter, living in either warring clans or tiny kingdoms. Periodic diseases end both old and young, while channelers fight over territory and power, binding the very essence of the world to their will and benefit, the power of energy. When New Erris was founded, there was new hope of achieving stability, yet now it teeters on the edge of collapse. Increasing pressures, threats coming in from west and south and internal squabbling are driving New Erris' resources to the limit. Across the Deep Sea other peoples lie in wait for the moment to ambush. And to make everything worse, something is brewing in the northern jungles, even if few are yet conscious of it. He claims to have seen a large force growing of all creatures as if a great attack was being planned. Normally Searon would confide in his good elven friend Starlyn, but she had an important task that she had to leave on in secret. Nobody seems to know where Starlyn went, or what was so important to her that she abandoned them, and her lifelong cause of finding her sister Arria. Meanwhile while she's gone Arria beings to surface once again, finally coming from the shadows to reek havoc on Sudegam. Searon must decide if he can help lead the elves to victory, or if even the new human alliance with the elves won't be enough, and another alliance needs to be formed, a dangerous alliance.
