Terezie Walters is an emotionally unstable seventeen year old. Before her parents divorced, her father had a homeschooling degree. She never had to go to school. When she was fifteen, her mother left the country to be with another man. Her father became depressed and stopped teaching her, so she never had a full education. He lied to the social workers, saying that he was still teaching Terezie so she wouldn't be taken to a real school and she could just stay home all day and force her to do things for him. Terezie's father despised her since she had her mother's eyes. He was abusive and alcoholic. Terezie decides to run away from her horrible life. Along the way, she meets Avan, a homeless boy whom she falls deeply in love with.
