Vee is 17. This is her last summer before college, and she wanted to spend it with her friends like she has every other summer, down at Lake Livingston. However, her mother has other plans.
Vee is going to her grandmother's house on Captiva, a small island off the coast of Florida, for the entire summer. The beaches there are beautiful, but that's the only good thing about it. There is nothing else to do there. She's upset, but decides to make the most of it. However, the trip ends up being more interesting than she expected...
When she meets a mysterious boy on the island, he makes it very clear that he wants nothing to do with her. The thing is, she sees him everywhere she goes. He hardly speaks to her, and acts as rude as he possibly can, but still, he's always there. It's a small island, so it could be a coincidence, but Vee doesn't believe in coincidences. The longer she stays on the island, the more she finds out about the unpleasant secrets hiding behind its beautiful mask. But when she decides to discover what is really going on, the truth about the island-and her family-leaves her shocked and, to be honest, a little terrified.
