The pendant gets warm when you are close to your soulmate, and freezes when you are far from them.

I forgot to write this in here earlier, but here I am. I did not originally come up with the idea for this. I read a version of this story on Tumblr. It did not have the characters' names, where this took place, or very many details at all. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of the writer, and so, therefore, I cannot credit him/her.
