Cat Valentine has been abused by her boyfriend everyday. Recently, she has been missing tons of bruises when she was trying to cover them and came to school with them. Everyone noticed, especially Robbie.
No one knew she had a boyfriend, even her flat mate, Sam.
She has been physically, verbally, emotionally, and sexually abused. Because he messed with her so much, she could never seek help for herself. She was afraid of what everyone would say, and therefore started the year with a different Cat. She didn't realize she was different, however.

Robbie Shapiro has been abused by his father everyday. Ever since his mother died, his father became aggressive and showed a strong dislike towards Robbie's sensitive and quirky personality. His father had a strange liking towards Rex, due to his similar aggressiveness and constant witty come backs even though he was a puppet.
He has beaten Robbie every night, even on sober nights for the weirdest reasons. Robbie came to school everyday with struggle marks and cuts on his face and arms and body. Constantly blaming it on his cat, Cat noticed the flaw in his lie, because as she has been told by Robbie's Mamawh, he was extremely allergic to cats.
Constantly getting terrifying and disturbing threats, he finds it hard to reach out for help, and therefore, started a year with a wall built around his heart and himself.

They both were in deep pain and anger and had worn their hearts on their sleeves. Now, their heart were now paper-like; fragile, light, can be torn, stepped on, crumpled and thrown away. They had paper hearts and had no one to colour them back to life.. that was until Cat and Robbie finally see each other again and reunite their friendship once more.
