After Ash looses in the Kalos region, he comes back home with Serena with a surprise. His so called 'friends' betray him and they flee with all of their Pokémon to Mount Silver, with now going under the names Red and Leaf.

5 years later, the Pokémon league has decided to host an international Pokémon tournament to decide who is the best of all trainers.
