This is my entry for the National Geographic #PlanetOrPlastic writing contest, wherein 500 words I have written a short story that was inspired by photos presented to us.

The Fall of Man
So much for an easy way to go. After thirty nine long years, each squandered day chained inexorably and uneventfully to the next, this is how it ends. How appropriate. You were always an introvert even if your family was outgoing so during the break from online school due to bullying almost having you trying to make you take your own life, your parents thought it would be good to let you have some fun. A family camping trip with your parents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents sounds fun but you don't like crowds, loud noises, or doing crazy things. You liked it quiet indoors with books, movies, video games, or playing by yourself outside away from other kids. Feeling unheard, you sneak off into the woods to sulk but everything changes when you see something fall from the sky and land just by the lake then you go to find... a weird-looking pink watch that doesn't even tell time. Not know, it does so much more... Say hello to your new friends.

Sometimes we have to look back to know where we are going. The past is not just water under the bridge: it's the same recycled water. Who knows how many times we have gone through the cycle. My crew and I take the jobs we need to survive in a world overrun by aliens. We fly a stolen ship that once trafficked women-us included. Now, we make our own rules and do whatever it takes to stay free. My latest job? Rehabilitate a Zohra-a towering alien locked away in prison, meant to be tamed into usefulness for his captors. Then I meet him-my job, a mute Zohra. And that's when everything goes sideways. Rescuing him wasn't in the plan, yet now we're on the run, supposedly relying on each other... except I'm the one doing all the work. He's frustrating. Completely useless. A liability, really.
