La Mort.

That is what the people of Chartres, Louisiana call their tiny hamlet. It is a place of black waters and death, a place outsiders fear, and when people disappear, no one asks questions. 

Emory Beaunay knows firsthand the truth of her town's nickname. Many years ago her mother was murdered, her body left to rot in the bayou. The murderer was never brought to justice, and the killing spree became something the locals talked about over chess and coffee.
