Those who bargain with butchers never return.

Dalen lives in a land crisscrossed with interconnecting rivers, both above-ground and underground. When his sister goes missing, mere days before her intended marriage, Dalen’s family assumes that she drowned.

But the truth is far stranger than that.

Narea, the daughter of a neighboring family, claims she hears his sister’s voice emanating from a sinkhole in her room, and that she is alive. Dalen’s sister has bargained with butchers, a half-forgotten race that lives in the rivers’ depths. With the help of a magic onion, Dalen sets out to find her. But in order to do so, he must make his own bargains…

At the edge of a forgotten bridge, under a sky heavy with stars, Dylan makes a choice she believes will silence the ache that has consumed her for years. Below, the river waits, promising the silence she craves. And with a trembling breath, she makes her choice-a final escape But the plunge doesn't deliver the end she expects. Instead, Dylan awakens-disoriented, drenched, and very much alive-on the riverbank. Something, or someone, has intervened, though she can't explain how or why. The world she thought she was leaving behind is still there, but it feels different now: sharper, stranger, and filled with questions she can't ignore. The house she returns to feels just as empty, and her father barely notices her presence. Yet, something shifts inside her. What follows is a path she never anticipated. Her journey forces her to confront the walls she built to keep the world out, leading her into fragile connections and unsettling truths. Piece by piece, the armor shielding her begins to crack, revealing a girl who must learn not just to survive but to live. Dylan's story is not about surrender but transformation-finding herself in the ruins of what once was. Through unexpected friendships and haunting revelations, she uncovers that while the past may haunt her, the future holds something far more powerful: the possibility of hope. Yet some second chances come at a price, and as Dylan inches closer to the truth, she realizes that survival was only the beginning.
